Marijn v.d. Vier Ambachtshoeve
(Thomas 327 X Anke V. (Jurjen 303) )
The Friesian Horse is unique, truly a horse to be proud of. Friesians are one of the most ancient European breeds of horse and modern Friesians are direct descendants of the horses that medieval knights used to ride into battle. They are native to the province of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. By the early 1900’s the breed was nearing extinction, but with love and patronage of a Queen, breeding guidelines were put in place and the purebred Friesian was saved.
The Friesian soon became the Royal Dutch Friesian, and these horses still pull the Royal carriages to this day. One of the outstanding characteristics of the Friesian horse is it’s very long mane and tail. These are never cut and often reach the ground. The breed also has abundant feather and long leg hair reaching from the middle of the leg. The color is always black, and only a white star on the forehead is permissable. They are very strong and muscular and stand between 15 and 16 hands on average.
Friesians are known for their excellent disposition. They are extremely friendly and intelligent horses. They are a noteworthy site in the showring. With their shiny black coat, flying mane and tail and high action, they form an imposing image. They are a popular horse among the English royalty for riding and pulling carriages, as well as circus horses. The Friesian is also very popular in Saddle Seat riding and Dressage.
